Part of municipality ‘De Friese Meren’
Rijs, with its 173 inhabitants, is located in the southwestern part of Friesland. Close to the Ijsselmeer and in possession of the ‘Rijsterbos’ (forest).
It is a small village that is involved with many types of watersports and it is covered with beautiful old trees on the sides of the road that invite you into the village. When driving up to the village, the first thing that catches your eye is the small animal-farm, which is accessible for everyone. This farm nurses chickens; loads of deer and a variety of goats that can make every person’s hart melt.
A big plus is the spacious parking-facility in front of the forest-entry, although parking is not a problem either in the rest of the village.
Just a few meters outside of Rijs, there is a phenomenal play-area for children (Sybrandy’s play-area), which is open from the first of April on. The slides and seesaws of the play-area are having a magnetizing effect on children.
Not only cycling through Rijs and its surroundings is recommended, correspondingly the village also offers a number of campsites, two hotels and four restaurants that will enlighten your holiday and that of your children.
It is recommended to have a chat with one of the locals to hear about the history of the village and do not forget to ask about the ‘family Van Swinderen’.
After a long afternoon of cycling through Rijs and its surroundings, do not hesitate to make a pit stop at Hotel Restaurant Jans. Not only can you enjoy a nice cup of coffee inside, they also offer you culinary delights. After having enjoyed your coffee, step outside again and relish the quietness of the rural area with its calming sound from singing birds.
Another secret of Rijs is the theatre-garden behind Hotel Jans where many cultural activities and performances take place.
Of course this leaves us with one question. What is keeping you from experiencing the many faces Rijs and its surroundings possess?
Get on your bike and get involved!
