De Nicolaaskerk (12e eeuw) in Hijum staat prominent op een kleine maar indrukwekkend hoge terp. De terp rond de kerk is grotendeels afgegraven waardoor de hoogte des te meer opvalt. Naast de kerk ligt de ijsbaan van het dorp (zie andere serie).
Als de bomen rond de kerk vol in het blad zitten is het vanwege de schaduwen best lastig om de kerk mooi op de foto te krijgen.
