Cities

Fryslân has a total of eleven cities as shown below. You might heard of the '11-cities' because of the world famous ice skating contest which had its first edition in 1909. Since then a total of 15 'Elfstedentochten' were organised. The final one in 1997. Ever since Fryslân is anxious when the next one will happen!

Nevertheless, all of the eleven cities in Fryslân have a rich past and cultural heritage. One by one worth a visit.

Bolsward is more than worth a visit! This magnificent city possessed during the Middle Ages a direct connection with the Middelsee and the Zuiderzee and was one of the two Frisian Hanseatic cities. The big boost the city of Bolsward experienced because of its internationally trade relations, is still reflected, inter alia, through the in 1615 built beautiful and rich decorated town house. Another striking building is the ruin of the 13th Century local Church which burned down in 1980. Due to the magnificent glass roof above the ruins, the church is still used for meetings, concerts or the like. But many other buildings in Bolsward are worth a visit too. It is the overall picture, that makes Bolsward so special. See for yourself and feel the historic atmosphere, convert it through the narrow alleys and streets, visit the different and in their own special fashion shops and rest in one of the lovely café’s. In addition, the city has some interesting museums. The distillery is established in which the famous Sonnema Berenburg is brewed. Furthermore, throughout the year a variety of events are held throughout the city.

The sumptuous surroundings of Bolsward also invites you to a trip or just a bicycle ride. A trip to the Frisian Sea, or the IJselmeer for example. And even trips to Vlieland or Terschelling are no problem when staying in Bolsward.Or do you prefer some of the other ’Elfsteden-cities’? Workum, Sneek and IJlst are just around the corner and Hindeloopen, Harlingen, Franeker and Leeuwarden can be reached by car within half an hour.

Conclusively, Bolsward is a good base from which to explore the most scenic part of Friesland. The city warmly welcomes you!

Dokkum is the northernmost town in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in the eleven cities, ’the Elfsteden”. Most of the time the city is brought in connection with Boniface, who was murdered in 754. However, Dokkum has far more to offer! The city itself has remained very well preserved, a fortress town where the rich history is evident everywhere. Until the 18th century the city had a direct connecting to the sea and therefor Dokkum was an important port city for a long time. Located at the former Harbor (the ’Grootdiep’) the ’Admiraliteitshuis’ still remembers of the time when the navy of Friesland and Groningen was settled in Dokkum. Today the monumental building is a museum whichh is more than worth a visit!

Explore Dokkum

It is possible to explore the city on your own. Walks along the canals, along the streets as well as over the bulwarks of the town invite everyone to feel the special atmosphere of the city, and to enjoy its historic past combined with the vitality of a modern shopping town. One is surprised by the abundant supply of shopping possibilities and the variety of coffee shops and restaurants. Also found in Dokkum are various galleries and museums, a theatre, a zoo and a subtropical swimming pool.

Furthermore, Dokkum offers the perfect location for further excursions into the surroundings. Directly south of the city begins the unique picturesque landscape of the Northern Frisian Woodland, which is regarded as a national landscape. To the north lies a vast marshland, surrounded by dikes, mounds, and beautiful villages. The National Park ’Lauwersmeer’ is easily accessible by bicycle and a day trip to Ameland or Schiermonnikoog is no problem.

In short: don’t be scared to stay more than one day in Dokkum! We invite you to this beautiful Frisian town and its surroundings.

Hindeloopen is a remarkable city and thanks its richness to seafaring. However, the city did not have a harbour. The settlement became a city due to the mercantile marine for especially the traders from Amsterdam. Hindeloopen took part in the Hanze alliance which resulted in a flourishing business with Scandinavia, the Baltic countries and England since the 14th century.

Hindeloopen is surrounded by the old Zuiderzeedijk. Near the small harbour is the rescue shed of the KNMR. When walking further, one can see the irregular buildings and a crisscross of streets, waters and alleys. The commander houses possess sophisticated front walls with mostly two horizontal masonry braid structures in the colours red and yellow. The most beautiful commandant house can be found on the corner of the Neighbors and the small canal of the Nieuwe Weg. Houses built in the same style are along the Nieuwstad. For instance, on the corner of the Nieuwstad and the Meenscharsteeg. A building named Irene was built in 1714 and has been rebuilt in 1930. At the Meenscharswiken are still a few ‘likhuzen’, which are small summer houses where families lived in times when captains and skippers were at sea. Another interesting aspect of Hindeloopen is the interior painting art. For instance, a house on the Nieuwe Weide 14 shows wall paintings of among other things the folkloric costumes of Hindeloopen. Hindeloopen is famous for its traditions. The folkloric costumes is still worn by special happenings. The inhabitants have their own language with even their own vocabulary. Regarding this, the street name signs are bilingual. The culture of Hindeloopen is exposed in the Museum Hidde Nijland in the former city hall that was built in 1682. Guests visiting the museum can admire the remained old carve and painting art based on Renaissance decoration patterns. The reformed church is established on the western edge of the city and is rebuilt in 1632 into a bigger building. The biggest house of Hindeloopen is the former city hall standing on the corner of two canals along the Nieuwe Weide. This eminent building was built in the style of Lodewijk XVI in the late 18th century. The post-war city expansion took place in the south of Hindeloopen. Nowadays, a new recreation harbour in the north of Hindeloopen is established.

This unique city accommodates different shops, terraces and two museums. One of them is the First Frisian Ice-skating museum which is worth visiting. One can discover the many treasures of Hindeloopen and surroundings by foot, bike or car. Nature, marvelous landscapes and peace, Hindeloopen has it all!

Workum might be more known as the city of Jopie Huisman and the museum which is named after him, than as one of the Frisian eleven cities. Workum has an outspoken artistic and cultural climate which is probably caused by this famous and unique artist. The city counts many museums, studios, galleries and has performances, manifestations and events, during the whole year.

At first sight, Workum might be not a real city as it never had defense works and the elongated structure of the city is different when compared to the other Frisian cities. However, this difference makes Workum unique in its character.

When taking a better look at Workum, especially the area around De Merk shows that Workum can be considered as a real city. One can find here the different rich decorated patrician houses, the city hall, the weighing house (“de Waaghuis”) and the impressive church with its separate tower and a beautiful sacristy. At de Merk and along It Noard and It Súd one can discover shops, sunny terraces and cosy restaurants.

Workum flourished as a result of goods trade and seafaring, which was made possible due to having a good connection with the Zuiderzee. The area surrounding the sluice is definitely a wonderful scenic and presents a shipyard that is more than 300 years old. The city abruptly moves over into a magnificent rural environment when moving more northern or southern. This area is perfect for cyclists, walkers and everyone who loves quietness and nature. Workum is a also paradise for beach and water activities lovers. Actually, surrounded by beautiful canals and located only 2 km from the Ijsselmeer, Workum can be described as the Venetia of Friesland.

Furthermore, Workum is rich in historical background and buildings. Accommodation and restaurants are definitely not a problem as Workum has plenty of options to offer. Come to visit and enjoy a unique and unforgettable experience!
