The Kievitfontein in Sloten was designed by Lucy and Jorge Orta from France. The object consists of a girl standing on the shoulders of a man. The man, in turn, stands on a stack of barrels, buckets, and tubs. These symbolize the abundant presence of water in the province of Friesland.

The girl has a lapwing in her hands. This meadow bird is common in the province of Friesland.

Unfortunately, the number of lapwings and other meadow birds in Friesland has been steadily decreasing in recent decades, apparently, by intensive agriculture and livestock farming combined with predation by predators like foxes and crows.
